This is a Southern staple that you’ll find throughout the area. There’s even a movie named after them! Whether you eat them plain or turn them into a sandwich, Fried Green Tomatoes can’t be beaten. Here’s an easy recipe that we think is just perfect.
Fried Green Tomatoes
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- ½ cup all- purpose flour, divided
- ½ cup buttermilk
- ½ cup cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1-2 dashes hot sauce
- 3 medium green tomatoes, cut into 1/3-inch slices
- Vegetable oil
Mix together egg, buttermilk, and hot sauce. Set aside. Combine ¼ cup all-purpose flour, cornmeal, salt, and pepper in a shallow bowl or pan. Set aside.
Pour vegetable oil to a depth of ¼ to ½ inch in a large cast-iron skillet; heat to 375 degrees F.
Dredge tomato slices in remaining ¼ cup of all-purpose flour, dip in buttermilk mixture, and dredge in cornmeal mixture.
Drop tomatoes, in batches, into hot oil, and cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels or on a rack. Sprinkle hot tomatoes with salt.
